Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story

"Through hard work, perseverance and a faith in God, you can live your dreams."
~Ben Carson

One of the most inspirational medical movies I have ever watched in my life is Gifted Hands. It's about the most renowned neurosurgeon of all time: Ben Carson.

For Ben Carson, growing up in the '60s was dangerous, especially as a poor black boy. Due to his poor grades, Carson's illiterate but hardworking single mother, Sonya urged Ben and his older brother Curtis to read two books a week and write a book report on them.

As a result of his reading, Ben Carson became the top in his class. He ended up receiving a scholarship to a prestigious college: Yale University. Later on, he went to the top medical school in the nation: Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. There, he served one year as a surgical intern and five years as a neurosurgery resident.

It was certainly not easy for Ben Carson to be what he is today. He had to fight poverty, prejudice and racism in order to become a neurosurgeon.

Although it was released in 2009, Gifted Hands is a 'must-see' movie. You can watch this movie on Netflix or you can buy it for six dollars on Amazon.

Here is a trailer to the movie...

This movie is especially inspiring for any person who may want to pursue any career in medicine. Medicine is certainly not an easy career to pursue, let alone neurosurgery! But like Ben Carson, through hard-work and perseverance, we can fight anything that might hinder us from reaching our goal. For Ben Carson, he had to fight racism and poverty. Our hindrances may be different for each and everyone of us, but we can fight them all, just like Ben Carson.

Don't let anything hinder you from pursuing your career in medicine. Keep on trying. Never give up.

Acute Subdural Hematoma Surgery

source Welcome back to my blog! For today's post, I decided to do something a little different. I want to put up a Youtube video of a brain surgery that I enjoyed watching. The patient is an 83 year old woman who fell down and injured her head.  This injury had given her acute subdural hematoma. Acute subdural hematoma (SDH), is usually caused by a head injury from a fall, an assault or a motor vehicle collision. SDH is a clot of blood that is formed between the dura mater (the brain's tough outer covering) and the brain. This blood clot is formed due to the stretching and tearing of veins on the brain's surface. These veins rupture when a head injury shakes and jolts the brain.  This surgery is done by a brain surgeon who will cut open the patient's head and remove the blood clot.  ** WARNING: Do not watch this video if you are squeamish at the sight of blood!!! ** If you are not squeamish at the sight of blood, sit back, relax and learn something n...

LEARN MORE ABOUT ME - Q&A SESSION

Happy New Year everyone! Welcome back to those who faithfully read my posts. And welcome to my blog to those who are new! Check out my other posts if you haven't yet. They're quite interesting.  T o kick off the new year, I wanted to do a Q&A post.  As I was looking through my previous blog posts, I saw that most of my posts were about medicine and college. None of them were about me! (Lol! I don't mean to sound selfish!😂) I really want my audience to know more about me. So, I hope you don't mind if I make this post a little different! ______   Here are a few common questions with my answer: Q: "What is your name?" A: My name is Kristine (with a 'K' if you didn't notice!). People tend to spell my name with a 'Ch' and its quite annoying! 😂 Q: "What grade are you in?" A: I am a sophomore in high school. Q: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" A: A doctor (duh!) That's why I made this blo...
